Nominated for BAFTA!

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has launched its Video Game Awards. BAFTA, perhaps better known as the British Academy Awards, is a prestigious honor until now reserved for Film and TV work. Opening it up to video games makes a lot of sense, according to the Guardian:
“The decision by BAFTA to make computer games its ‘third arm’ is overdue endorsement of a genre that has struggled for artistic recognition….. If recognition by BAFTA helps the industry to raise its game, then it will soon be accepted without dispute.”
–Mark Brown, The Guardian

The fun part is that our game, Civilization IV: Warlords is a nominee in the Strategy Game category. We’re obviously all very excited and proud, and I’ll be going to London next week to attend the award ceremony.

The secret life of secret projects…

“Comics!?” Yes. The comics bug bit me.

I guess it was bound to happen. All this looking at Kazu’s stuff, and reading the Flight anthologies. One thing about me – when I see cool stuff, I want to make cool stuff. So this comic is the latest cool thing I’ve wanted to do.

Meanwhile, the novel is on hold (80% done, 65,000 words) while I work on this comic, as well as a short animated film I need to get done by mid November. More on the film, and the comic, as they both come along.

Now, someone out there is accusing me of having Creative ADD. Whatever. I like doing a variety of projects, and I don’t spend a lot of time gazing at my navel to see what makes me tick. I just have a lot of projects going at once, and that’s the way it is.

Anyway, that’s it for today’s news break. More bulletins as events warrant.

WORD COUNT: 65,500

3D World article – The Fly

3D World magazine issue #83 is out. I wrote the Showreel article on Hanjin Song’s animated short film “The Fly”. This is one I actually came across at SIGGRAPH.

Kazu Kibuishi

I recently came across Kazu Kibuishi’s work on the web, and boy am I glad. He’s a comic book artist, but amazingly so. Not content to just draw one thing, he’s all over the map, and quite prolific. I like that.

He created and drew the elegant and entertaining Daisy Kutter books, as well as online favorites Copper and Clive & Cabbage. My kids love these last two, and are impatiently awaiting the next installment of Copper. In fact, Copper is one of those rare strips that brings back the good things about Calvin and Hobbes, and that is high praise indeed, but it’s definitely earned.

As if that wasn’t enough, he is the editor as well as a contributor to the Flight series of comics anthologies. It seems to have started off as a collection of Kazu’s friends. But since he’s good, and his friends are good, and everyone involved in the project seems to have good taste, the Flight series is a highlight of the comics industry.

Kibuishi also shares his process with his fans, which is a rare and valuable treat. Any artists among you harboring a secret desire to draw comics, look at this page at your own risk: comic fever is contagious. At least I found it so.
