Better to see the bat

In my Little Pumpkinhead drawing (HERE), there is a bat that I just threw into the background. I didn’t sketch it out, I didn’t really intend to put it in. It was just an afterthought, something I scribbled in with my computer mouse as I was coloring it.

It took my friend Mike to cut it out and send it to me, before I realized what the best part of that illustration is. Of course, it’s the part that took 5 seconds and no thought. HA!

Something my kids said at dinner got me thinking of this. I gave myself an hour to do it. It took two. (CLICK to ENLARGE)

*shrug* Guess I’m just in a Halloween mood right now.

Another Spooky Thing for Halloween. For some reason, I like this one much, much better than The Pumpkin Avenger (see below).

LITTLE BOY: Gee, mister. Thanks!

3D World magazine issue #84 is out. I wrote the Showreel article on a truly excellent animated short film called “Burning Safari”, by some exceedingly talented students at the French film / animation school Gobelins. The short pits robots against monkeys. This is just pure fun, and the animation is very stylized and so hip. Love this film.

OK. I’ve been working on the comic. It’s called The Lucky Guy, and it’s two pages and a cover so far. I think it’ll be 5 pages when it’s done.Page 3 should arrive next week.

On Returning from London empty-handed

You know… they say it’s an honor just to be nominated for a BAFTA, and it is. And it was an honor just to go to London and witness the event. But I guess I spent so much time thinking about what an honor it was for Civilization IV: Warlords to be nominated, and how good it would feel to win, that I didn’t really give much thought to what it would mean NOT to win.

Hmm. A lesson in humility.

Rise And Fall: Civilizations At War took the BAFTA in our category (Strategy). Oooh, so close. Even had the word “Civilization” in the title. Close. But no cigar. Congratulations to the team over at Midway for winning our –I mean, this — prestigious award. *blush*

But, boy is London a great town… this was the view outside my hotel room:

Yep. Big Ben. I had a few hours and walked around my little area of London. So many things I’d heard of and wanted to see were a short walk from me… Soho, Fleet Street, St. Martin-in-the-fields, Trafalgar Square (Nelson’s Column), Big Ben, Parlaiment, Westminster Abbey, the Eye of London, the Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre…

I loved it. I hope to go back one day, maybe with a BAFTA film nomination…
