The simple compexity of the intricately plain

Ah, Bob Logan’s Rocket Town – this is just SO much fun! Love those flat shapes, those whacked out silhouettes. I don’t even know what this is. A movie? A book? A bunch of drawings in a website? All of the above? Doesn’t matter. I want ALL OF IT!

This kind of stuff really appeals to me. Does that surprise you? Do you ever see this influence in my work, say, on Moon Town? Because really, that was much more the plan, at least in the beginning. Look at this:

Strange, the force that wants to pull me away from that into a much more 3D, fully realized aesthetic. I may have mentioned it before, but the two impulses that battle for my creative soul are these:

1. The desire to create something detailed, beautiful, and well-lit. Something you can believe in. Something you feel like you can reach out and grab. The following samples are by Arild Wiro, and I just love them.

I love the color, the atmosphere, the alternate reality of it.

The other side is:
2. Yannick Puig’s “I Lived on the Moon”. These shapes are so simple. They’re much more like the 2D stuff from Rocket Town, but in 3D, which is interesting. They’re simple like the StudioAKA Pica Towers stuff is simple. And yet, they have tons of charm.

So, I guess that’s the fight. Simple Charm vs. Intricate Beauty. I wish I could tell you that I really favor one over the other. But I love them both. How do you synthesize them? How do you reconcile them? How do you choose one over the other? I don’t know. Maybe you don’t.

But as I mull over the look and feel and future of Moon Town, these are the things that occur to me.

Vidscreen

Still waters run deep here at Moon Town, Inc., and I know the waters have been very still here for quite a bit. But I know you’re hungry for more information about the project. Here’s a little rendering to reward your patience… the video screen in the Terraluna Security Agency garage.

Wazzup – Eight Years Later

Back in 2000, the Budweiser Wazzup guys were quite the rage, until people got sick of hearing people scream “Wazzup!” at each other inspired by the humorous spot. The spot went the way of “Where’s the Beef” and the Domino’s Noid campaigns, and Wazzup faded into memory.

Until now. The boys star in a hysterical new short that picks up eight years later, and for some reason, things are not going so well for them. WARNING: Make sure you aren’t drinking anything when you watch this because you’re going to laugh and spit whatever it is all over your computer.

Just the facts, ma’am

This is not a political blog, but as the US Presidential Race draws to its final month, I just want to remind my readers that although we are evidently living in the Post-Facts era, where Truth seems irrelevant and emotion and opinion seem to rule the day, facts still matter. So when you hear a candidate at a rally saying nasty things about their competition, remember that in today’s political climate, there are three sides to every story: Their Side, Our Side, and The Truth.

Before you let possibly unfounded statements from a politician guide your thinking, or God Forbid, your vote, and before you repeat the possible lie to all your like-minded friends, please do some fact checking. HERE’s one place to start.

Ignorance is not a virtue. We now return you to your regularly scheduled head-scratching.
