I always wondered what’s going through the showrunner or lead writer’s mind as a show is airing its finale. As far as Ronald D. Moore goes (the Executive Producer and Developer of the freshly concluded new Battlestar Galactica), now we know, for he has posted his feelings on the subject at his blog.
My favorite line:
All I know is that today there is a show called Battlestar Galactica and tomorrow there was.
Senior year. Heh.
BTW – many of you know I’m a big fan of Ron’s post-show podcasts, where he breaks down the episode, what went right, what went wrong, what he did differently, and WHY. Here‘s what Ron was drinking during the final podcast. Hmm. 25 year old Scotch. Pity he couldn’t afford the new stuff. ![]()

A younger scotch might have led to a very different finale indeed. As much as I ate up the more cheesy and “on-the-nose” elements, I must say the ideas stayed with me for days.
I cannot give a dissection without spoilers, so I’ll just say that while I can see why it left some people feeling “hollow”, I actually quite liked it, warts, angels and all.
(oops – was that a spoiler? Some folks don’t know about the warts, do they?)
I haven’t seen the final 2 hours yet, just the first of the three, but I’ve listened to the first hour of Ron’s final 3 hour podcast. He’s spoiled a couple of things for me, but it’s OK. I don’t watch the show for content anymore, but style and construction, and he explains plenty about that. It’s like going to a class on episodic storytelling, I swear. What to do, what not to do. Gospel. Hopefully I’ll see the final 2 hours tonight. My buddy loaned me this ancient technology called a VHS on which he recorded the show…
And after, I suppose I’ll have a cig and a swig. Farewell, ya bastard. I so loved ye.
