I get to sketching, and Moon Town is never far from my mind. This quick sketch of the complex and refinery has a lot of charm. I am so drawn to the vibrant energy of these quick, sloppy sketches. I could see a whole movie done in that quirky style.
And yet I am drawn to the careful, masterful rendering of someone like Nick Constantine at Massive Black. Part of a refinery he designed for Red Faction is reproduced below.

They really are two drastically different approaches and solutions to the same problem. I love the energy of my nutty sketch, and I love the virtuosity of Nick’s drawing. Yet if you built either of these structures for a game, or a movie, or what have you, they would say completely different things about the project, wouldn’t they?
How about you? What style do you prefer?

They sure would. I agree I love the energy of the first sketch. The detailed one is cool of course too. I guess it all depends on what the goals are for the project, and time of course. The amount of effort to consistently do stuff like #2… you know how it is. And isn’t MT supposed to have humor? Seems to me 1 fits the bill in more ways than one.
Yes, and well said. Moreover, did you see the simplistic design in Varmints? Sort a roadmap on how to get stuff done well, to look gorgeous, but without excess sweat and blood. Or so it seems. Perhaps that work is deceptively hard, sometimes you have to work hard to make something look easy. But all I know is, that sketch I did of the refinery *was* easy, not just deceptively so. Hmm.
well…I mean, have iether of you seen the 1988 Red Dwarf?
Series one and two?

We’ve seen you go down this road before. I think what ultimately sells “Moon Town” as a work by Steve Ogden is when it has something that is unmistakeably you. While Constantine’s work is nothing short of amazing, it just wouldn’t be something I would equate with coming from you.
