Hobbit

Well, no matter if you think 3D is The Future of Movies or just a cheap gimmick to lure the theatre-fatigued public out of their cozy Blu-Ray equipped HDTV Dolby 5.0-equipped home setups and back to the multiplex, it looks like 3D isn’t going away any time soon. And so it was revealed at The Hobbit Movie News that Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies are planned to come out in 3D.

At least they’re being shot in true 3D, so at least the industry has learned that hackishly retrofitting films into 3D (see Clash of Titans, The, 2010) is not only a recipe for a lack of success, but a superhighway to public ridicule and financial failure. Ah, the littered flop-film highway, so full of good intentions, and so full of crap.

But I digress. I’m sure Jackson’s masterpiece will be a real treat. I’ve been waiting for this film since I was 8 years old, and that’s a long time.

I’m pleased to see StudioAKA’s Varmints for sale at the iTUNES store. Adapted and directed by StudioAKA’s Marc Craste, Varmints is a 24-minute film based on the award-winning book of the same name by Helen Ward and illustrated by Marc. Varmints tells the story of one small creature’s struggle to preserve a world in danger of being lost forever through recklessness and indifference.

In other news, StudioAKA’s adaptation of Lost and Found is available on DVD from Amazon and all good retailers beginning April 20th, 2009. However, it appears Amazon US is not yet offering it for sale. More bulletins as events warrant.

The secret is OUT! J. J. Abrams (seen here wearing the limited edition Moon Town t-shirt I sent him) is throwing his hat into the Moon Town fray. :) I haven’t been able to talk about this until now, but I’m pleased to announce that it looks like Moon Town is going to be a Feature Film!

Most of the details have yet to be ironed out, but J. J. Abrams and Aardman Animations (who have a little history animating a story on the moon, above) are all somehow involved in the project. Details to be resolved, but obviously the plan is to do it as a stop motion film with CG augmentation. This is very exciting.

Not much on the cast so far, but names have been bandied about such as Simon Pegg as Simon (naturally), Cameron Diaz as Cassie, and Gary Busey as Vetterick. Gimme a Jeff Foxworthy as Jimmy, and I’m in hawg heaven! More details as events warrant… Yeah!

OK. Fun is fun. Yes, it was an April Fool’s joke

Theme Planet

As the main characters race to the center of Michael Sormann’s Theme Planet, I have to wonder what’s just around the next bend. Watching this film develop is great entertainment.

Sormann is also quite prolific. Details and gobs of geometry just seem to fall out of his fingers onto the computer screen. He updates his Theme Planet website frequently and always has something interesting to show.

Once the lead artist at Rockstar Vienna (a computer game company), he is now freelancing to support himself as necessary, and dedicating the rest of his time to finishing his film. Still no estimate of a finish date, but the fact that he’s moved his film project from a part-time concern to something more approaching full time can only be a good sign for the film.

IN THE DIRECTOR’S WORDS:

Theme Planet is a giant theme park floating through Space, consisting of strange, huge attractions. There is no surface, just gigantic structures like rollercoasters and other attractions.

From the heights of these structures down to the very heart of the planet, in the mysterious planet’s core lies the hidden lair of the “Mad Constructor”. This bizarre madman tinkers in his secret laboratory headquarters deep within the planet’s depths alongside his humble assistant “Igor”.

In the upper regions of the planet, thousands of creatures busy themselves, working on the maintenance and organisation of the whole structure. And this is where we find our two heroes, Pig and Elephant: they work as technicans on the forever-crumbling rollercoasters.

As for me, I’ve been working for several years now in the Computer game industry. Until recently I was Head of the Art Department of Rockstar Vienna. I have always dreamed about creating a feature film and I hope that my short film project “Theme Planet” is a step in this direction.

I like movies a lot and it would be great to buy myself some popcorn in the lobby of a cinema featuring “Theme Planet” one day.

The third trailer for the upcoming Star Trek trailer is up at Stephen Hunt’s SF Crow’s Nest (it’s not up at Apple Trailers yet, curiously…)

Not much that hints much about story or character development in this trailer, but it certainly looks to be a gorgeous, action-packed movie. I’ll be lined up on May 8.

Star Trek Trailer #2

Very exciting, very exciting. The second trailer for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot is online. I don’t know how Star Trekkie it will be, which is to say, I’m not sure what the purists will think about it.

But for those of us who like exciting sci-fi movies, this looks primed to deliver. And I see enough suggestion at character development that I get the feeling the creator of Lost (with all those flashbacks) will give us something worth seeing.

I’ll see your cautious optimism and raise you a grinning fanboy. I’m going to see it next May.
