Moon: the Movie

Duncan Jones’ Moon. Ah… in Hollywood-speak, this film is indie all the way, Moon Town meets Solaris meets 2001: A Space Odyssey. And it stars no less than Zaphod Beeblebrox himself, Sam Rockwell. In other words, it has my attention! The premise is solid, the character bits seem well achieved, and the trailer – holy mackerel, great production values. This thing looks ready-for-prime time, and this is a first directorial outing for Mr. Jones.

I am eager to see the film, and if you have a look at the trailer that just surfaced, perhaps you will be eager to see it, too…

Thanks to Michael Dowswell for the tip.

For those of you who, like I, entertain fantasies of being a writer, and for those of you who just enjoy hearing about writers and their processes, I recommend The Write Environment. This is a nice resource containing interviews with different TV and pop writers including Joss “Firefly” Whedon, Tim “Heroes” Kring and Damon “Lost” Lindloff, talking about their inspirations, their intentions, and their way of working. There are even DVDs for sale.

Apologies to visitors at LunaEntertainment.com / SteveOgden.com. I’m redoing the site because it’s been a long time since I did anything with it. Lots of junk in there. Should have something back online in a few days. Thank you. – The Management.

Thank goodness I don’t use the Mayan calendar

The Maya referred to ours as the fifth age of man, which implies the earth has been created and destroyed 4 times previous, and the Maya anticipated at least two more (a total of seven, for those keeping count). According to the calendar, this fifth age is scheduled to end in 2012, as many have noted, some with increasing hysteria. Now, I don’t buy into the doomsday scenarios that seem to crop up every few years. Y2K bug, anyone?

However, I am somewhat interested in the near earth object Apophis, which is due for a visit in our neighborhood in 2029, and by a freak accident of gravitational physics, would then be pulled in for a collision with Earth on its return visit in 2036. That’s assuming we don’t annihilate ourselves through war, pollution, and other foolishness before then. Save ourselves for Aphophis, I say – the way nature intended!

NASA does have a plan to deal with Apophis – a gravity tractor, as was eleganty explained by Neil Degrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium.

In case you miss the collision in 2036, the Discovery Channel has provided this striking video illustrating the effect should a 500km asteroid collide with the earth. My first thought is – CANNONBALL! My second thought is – Oh. I think there went New Zealand. OK, this is more serious than I thought…

Today’s my turn on the Guest Strip Project, a charity that benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Guest Strip Project gets various cartoonist types to guest write-and-draw the strip, each one for a day, and that the ad proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish.

Lotta fun, and good to be asked. It’s always an interesting experience to try to get into somebody else’s characters and universe, and try to write gags for them. By funny coincidence, my strip goes pretty well with the one before it, even though each of us drew the strips with no knowledge of what the other was doing, or even what was coming before or after us.

Anyway, I encourage you to go have a look, browse through their archive. Quite a variety of entries, and you help Make-A-Wish just by browsing through the comics.

One from Aardman, one from StudioAKA

Wallace and Gromit are back! No, not another Hollywood-flavored feature film, but a return to the charming exceedingly northern British excellence of Aardman’s Wallace and Gromit short films like A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, and A Close Shave. The BBC announced the short, “A Matter of Loaf and Death“, in which the duo own a bakery – Top Bun – only to find that a “cereal killer” is targeting all the bakers in town.

The 30-minute short is to debut during this Christmas season… but sadly it appears only on BBC1 thus far. But one can cross fingers.

In other Excellent British Animation news, my buddies over at StudioAKA have a new short based on the children’s book “Lost and Found” by Oliver Jeffers. In true AKA style, the crew has put a LOT more into this film than was in the book. That said, the book was so charming I bought it last Christmas and thought seriously about trying to animate it myself. Darn you, StudioAKA! Always one step ahead… and lightyears more creative, of course.

The 25-minute film is directed by Philip Hunt, and will be on TV on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas for the uninitiated) but… once again, and alas… only in the UK. For more info, see the post at Cartoon Brew.

Did I tell you how much I enjoyed my trip to London? Oh, I did? OK.

Just asking. I have a couple of funny and/or embarrassing stories involving Zach Braff and the St. Martin’s Hotel staff that I never mentioned. If you want to hear, you know all you have to do is ask. (Though I should make it clear that the events are mostly unrelated).

Thanks to Tom Dell’Aringa for the tips…
