I’m happy to report that my Inkapalooza project keeps rolling on, as more supportive fans of Moon Town have continued buying original inkings and picking up book #1 at no additional cost. By Rathgar’s Hammer, What Savings!

Yes, that’s me up there, putting down the details first, inking old-school: pencil, paper, ink and light-table. This is how I’ve been inking for 30 years, and although I have a nice Cintiq at work, I cannot justify the thousands of dollars for one at home. So I imagine I will continue inking this way until something changes. Maybe I’ll win the lottery one day? Or maybe everyone will buy a copy of Moon Town? Hey, a guy can dream.

Second stage – I use my brush pen to fatten up the lines and do some blackspotting.

Aaaand finally the finished piece.

What’s that you ask? How can you get your very own Moon Town inking and a free copy of book #1? I thought you’d never ask! Go to WishTales Publishing – you’ll find a bunch of great pics to choose from, just in time for the holidays. You’ll be glad you did!

I am honored and somewhat surprised to announce that Moon Town has been named by Baltimore Magazine as the Best Online Graphic Novel in their annual Best of Baltimore issue. The magazine is on newsstands and available for your iPod and other eReaders right now, and it appears you will need to purchase the issue in order to see the entire list of 280 restaurants, businesses and artsy things that have been selected as the Best this year.

Shameless Plug: Moon Town books are still available from WishTales Publishing while supplies last!

For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the next installment of Moon Town, this was just the kind of shot in the arm I needed, so stay tuned for more Moon Town resuming this week!

Thank you, Baltimore!

The latest edition of the Steve Ogden Braincast is up online with a little bit of Director’s Commentary! It’s a short one this week, but better short and sweet than long and bitter, I always say. OK, I don’t always say that, but I’m saying it now. Anyway, it’s Part Three of the great Spoilerific Director’s Commentary for Moon Town: Breaking Lane. This time, I talk about chapter two, the design principles of function over form, and how one of my characters ended up accidentally naming another. Bonus: I mention a Star Wars character – try to guess which one! Music by Tim Larkin.

Steve Ogden Braincast #21

The latest edition of the Steve Ogden Braincast is up online with a little bit of Director’s Commentary! Part Two of the great Spoilerific Director’s Commentary for Moon Town: Breaking Lane. This time, I talk about my process for coming up with the first chapter, and how the whole thing might have started with a Skeeter. I also talk about Lost, Heroes, and the way flashbacks are somewhat abused by writers of episodic content. Music by Tim Larkin.

Steve Ogden Braincast #20

The latest edition of the Steve Ogden Braincast is up online with a little bit of Director’s Commentary! The driving BrainCast returns as I’m once again behind the wheel after a lengthy hiatus from Moon Town and the BrainCast. This is finally Part I of my long-promised Spoilerific Director’s Commentary about Moon Town Book #1, where I talk about what Moon Town might have been, and the Adventures of Ace Tripwire. Music by Tim Larkin.

Announcing WishTales!

bigwish

After much secrecy and sneaking around, I’m excited today to announce Wishtales Publishing Studio! What is Wishtales you ask? This pretty well sums it up:

Once upon a time, the path for an aspiring artist/creator was clear: Get an agent. Get a publisher. Get that comic of yours syndicated. Go for the Big Time.

We are all awakening to a publishing reality that looks very different. That path may be changing. It may have completely gone away.

Agents are swamped with wannabes. Big publishers are too large and too conservative to take chances on anything. And syndicates make an increasingly small living by keeping the newspaper comics section exactly as it is today. Basically, the publishing structure exists to say “NO”.” NO” to new ideas. “NO” to new creatives. “NO” to anything that looks like a chance, anything that hasn’t been tried before, anything that isn’t a sequel or a sequel to a sequel to a spinoff.

In short, we didn’t want to start a publishing company; They made us do it. We’re putting our money where out mouths are. If no one wanted to take a chance on us, OK. We’ll do it. If no one wanted to let us choose non-standard formats for our books, OK. We’ll do it. We’re taking a chance on us, and if it works out, who knows? Maybe one day we’ll take a chance on you. Somebody has to do it.

- Tom Dell’Aringa and Steve Ogden

Yes, this is a joint venture between me and my good buddy Tom Dell’Aringa. We’re tired of trying to play corporate games and trying to fit into a mold that is constricting and limiting. We’re going to forge our own path. The first step along that path is Tom’s Marooned book, Out of Orbit, which will be a Wishtales imprint. We’re just getting started, but there’s some interested posts over there already. We’re looking forward to publishing a Moon Town book as well, and we’ve got lots more ideas cooking in the pot. So head over to Wishtales and take a look, and let us know what you think!
